Betty Dixon – moving on

Having lived in Kirkby on Bain since her childhood, Betty is moving away from the village to join some of her friends in Horncastle. On Saturday last, she found out just how much respect and affection she has inspired in all those in Kirkby who know her, and just how popular she is, as she found herself the centre of attention at a surprise garden party held in her honour.

And it really was a surprise when she caught sight of the tables and chairs set out on the Briscombe lawn on the dot of three o’clock, evidence of a neighbourly conspiracy. In fact her first comment was that she thought it must be book group day. As the applause rang out, she realised how wrong you can be.

In the time-honoured way, refreshments were taken and lively conversations ensued, all under the blistering sun of a perfect English summer day, and Martin marked the occasion with a short speech and a toast in Betty’s honour. In response Betty was keen to point out that though she was moving house, she would be in the village as often as possible. She won’t be short of invitations, that’s for sure.

John Dudley captured the moment on his smartphone:
