Satire, apples, Lancasters and gardens

Some suggestions for things to do and places to go within easy traveling distance from Kirkby on Bain:

The Horncastle Theatre Company is proud to present Yes, Prime Minister, by Antony Jay and Jonathan Lynn, directed by David Ireland, at the Lion Theatre, Bull Ring, Horncastle, Lincolnshire LN9 5HT from Wednesday 28 September to Saturday 1 October.

With the country on the brink of financial meltdown the PM is staring disaster in the face with his only apparent salvation in a morally dubious deal with the Foreign Minister of Kumranistan. Will Jim Hacker and his team of advisors be able to rescue the country from the edge? This amateur production is presented by arrangement with SAMUEL FRENCH LTD.

Curtain Up 7:30pm nightly. Box Office, Horncastle Music Shop 01507 526566. Tickets £7 & £6 (concessions). Call to check latest times or cancellations.

Wragby Apple Day: A Celebration of Apples and Orchards at Wragby Town Hall, Wragby, Lincolnshire LN8 5PH, on Sunday 2 October, from 11am to 4pm, free entry.

The Lincolnshire Organic Gardeners’ Organisation (LOGO) is hosting its 6th Apple Day at Wragby. The East of England Apples & Orchards Project will support this event with its display of 150 apple varieties and its team of identification experts.

Do you have a mystery apple tree? Bring along three typical examples with stalks intact and piece of stem with some foliage. If your tree is more than 50 years old there’s a chance you may have one of the potentially ‘lost’ Lincolnshire varieties such as Old Man, Garrett’s Golden Pippin, Stoup’s Leadington.

Or how about some Apple Juicing? You will be able to get up to 10kg of your own clean apples juiced for free. (Don’t forget to bring containers for the juice!) The LOGO members’ produce stall will be offering homegrown and homemade vegetables, fruit, honey, preserves, plants and lots of apples, and there will be plenty of organic gardening advice and displays by other associated organisations. Not to mention activities for younger children and delicious homemade refreshments!
