From David Johnson, Alzheimer’s Society in Lincolnshire:
“Side by Side” is a pilot scheme that enables people with Dementia to continue doing the things they love or to try something new with the help of a volunteer. We find out as much as possible about the person with Dementia and the Volunteers and what they enjoy doing, before they are “matched” on these criteria. Lincolnshire is one of only one of seventeen areas in the country chosen for the pilot scheme.
Volunteers undergo training and a DBS check and are fully supported throughout. All we ask of the person with Dementia is that they have sufficient capacity to successfully engage with the service, and we are hoping to get some great success stories soon! Read More
My other role is running four Carers Groups, in Lincoln, Welton, Saxilby and Gainsborough. These are clubs for carers of people with Dementia, whose needs can sometimes be overlooked. The clubs are a place to come along to meet others in a similar situation. We provide a friendly and relaxed social setting to enable the carers to spend time sharing information and experiences or simply have a cup of tea and a chat.
Staff and volunteers are on hand to give the carers information and support. Guest speakers provide further information on other services that may benefit them.
I travel around Lincoln and Lincolnshire a lot making contact with individuals and organisations interested in these projects and who may be able to supply volunteers for both Side by Side and the Carers groups, and people who would like to use the services, so both people with Dementia and their Carers.
